Ford addresses ‘disturbing’ anti-maskers at his home; Alberta sees lack of cooperation with contact tracers

On Tuesday, Oct. 13, Justin Trudeau announced that Canada has secured 28.4 million rapid COVID-19 tests, which can deliver results in less than 20 minutes.

The chief medical officer of health, Dr. Theresa Tam, said the tests will be deployed possibly by the end of the week or early next week to provinces and territories.

In Ontario, Premier Doug Ford asked people to support take-out initiatives at restaurants in the province’s three hotspots where new restrictions are in place. In addition, he pleaded with Uber Eats to reduce the commission rates it’s charging, in order to help restaurants amid the pandemic.

To finish his press conference, Ford called out those who are spreading disinformation about COVID-19, especially the “anti-maskers” who have been showing up at his house.

As COVID-19 continues to spread nationwide, Quebec announced more restrictions for three regions, Saskatchewan limited gathering sizes at households, and British Columbia health officials pleaded with citizens to get their flu shot amid influenza season. In Alberta, health officials said they’re seeing an increasing number of people who are refusing to share information with contact tracers.

‘There’s no hidden agenda’: Doug Ford shares frustration over those discrediting the COVID-19 pandemic

As the second wave of COVID-19 makes its mark on Ontario, Premier Doug Ford addressed those who are trying to discredit the reality of the virus, such as by calling it fake.

“There’s no hidden agenda … it’s sheer facts,” said Ford. “What I get from the chief medical officer, I will put it right on the table good, bad or ugly. …

“I’m going to repeat this again, there is no agenda. I’m the last guy in the world that would put up with that. I just, it just wouldn’t happen under my watch. I’m here to protect the people of Ontario, keep them safe.”

Ford credits the media, who he called “phenomenal,” for helping deliver the government’s message on protocols throughout the pandemic.

It’s a contrast compared to what the premier describes has been occurring in front of his home.

“We have the anti-maskers showing up to my house again,” said Ford.

“You know, flying the flag upside down. That’s disturbing to say the least. You don’t like our country, want to disrespect the people of this country and the flag; go on, take off, leave, find another place you can fly your flag upside down.”

Ford announcements funding for Ontario businesses impacted by latest restrictions, calls out Uber Eats

Ford announced $300 million to provide relief for local restaurants and other businesses that have been impacted by the province’s latest health measures.

The news comes after Ford announced on Friday that indoor dining will have to close for restaurants and bars in the province’s three hotspots of Ontario, Peel and Ottawa. These venues will

This Smart Home Gym Is The Future Of Fitness

JaxJox, which makes a smart personalized home gym that uses AI to track and improve your performance and give you a wellness score, just scored itself. The Seattle-based fit tech company announced today that it has raised $10 million to bring its JaxJox “interactive fitness studio” to market.

The company also announced an exclusive retail partnership with Best Buy, and customers can get the fitness studio installed by Best Buy’s Geek Squad.

The system consists of a 43” touchscreen TV that can display fitness classes as well as data about your performance. The screen rotates both horizontally and vertically, and tilts if you’re doing floor exercises. Crucially, however, JaxJox isn’t just about cardio: the system has integrated smart dumbbells and a smart kettlebell — both configurable for different weights — that also report performance data. There’s also a “smart push-up device” and a vibrating, massaging foam roller.

All integrate with Apple’s HealthKit and will integrate with GoogleFit in a few months.

“The InteractiveStudio is the first home gym that includes connected free-weight equipment with AI performance tracking and interactive live and on-demand coaching for a personalized workout experience,” the company says. “Interactive Studio has a substantially richer training experience with personalized, real-time data including repetitions, power and a proprietary Fitness IQ score.”

That Fitness IQ score is generated by AI, the company says, and includes data on peak and average power, heart rate, workout consistency, steps, body weight, and the fitness level you’ve chose to attain.

“Beyond fitness-tech products, my vision is to close the gap between fitness and health,” says JaxJox CEO Stephen Owusu. “By monitoring performance metrics and using AI, we can give users a more holistic view of their health and provide recommendations on improving their wellbeing. We know working out is only one aspect of wellness and will continue to enhance our platform to provide an unparalleled experience.”

This type of home gym, that enables smart workouts either solo or with others — JaxJox has a gym friends feature that lets you work out with a few friends — is the future of home fitness. Along with a few other video-centric competitors (notably Peloton, which of course lacks the weights component) something like this feels like the future of gyms.

At least for those of us who aren’t planning to return to a public gym anytime soon.

I asked Owusu for a few more details via email:

John Koetsier: How close is the full hardware/software package to release?

Stephen Owusu: The InteractiveStudio will be released by the end of this year.

Koetsier: Is there a vision to eventually add a cycle and/or treadmill? Would you build it yourself or integrate with existing players?

Owusu: We always look for opportunities to simplify a consumers experience and allow them to integrate other fitness tech into our platform. That way they can bring all their data to one centralized location.

Virtual classes offer fitness and mindfulness at home

June 17, 2020

The University of Washington typically offers a broad schedule of health and fitness classes for the community. But with COVID-19 prompting closures of campuses and work spaces, gyms like the IMA Building also found themselves empty with in-person activities canceled.

“I knew we had to do something,” said Jeff Palmer, fitness manager for UW Recreation. “I wanted to make sure everyone was getting an awesome, fun workout.”

Now, Palmer is teaching several virtual classes a week, part of UW Recreation’s effort to make its activities accessible while people are physically distancing during the pandemic.

Danny Arguetty, UW Recreation’s mindfulness manager, also shifted from training new instructors to teaching virtual classes on meditation and yoga. Zumba instructor Karen Cornelio is leading free dance exercise classes in addition to other fitness and mindfulness sessions offered by The Whole U, an group that promotes wellness within the UW community.

They say that in addition to the positive benefits of exercise, the live virtual classes have helped participants create some structure and community in their lives.

“People are really craving that, at a time when things are out of control,” Palmer said. He said he’s also found a new audience of people who already felt uncomfortable going to gyms or who needed to be home anyway.

If you are not able to join a live class, many are archived in this YouTube library. The videos are open to the public, so anyone can view them.

“Virtual programming has just really, really taken off. We’re definitely going to continue virtual training even when we return to the IMA,” Palmer said.

Home workout apps booming as gyms close due to coronavirus

  • As major gym chains close their doors to curb the coronavirus outbreak, people are increasingly turning to digital workout programs to maintain their exercise routines from home.
  • Services like Daily Burn, Aaptiv, and TA Online Studio have all said they’ve seen an increase in demand and engagement over the past several days.
  • The boon comes as gyms like Equinox, 24 Hour Fitness, and SoulCycle among other leading fitness clubs have temporarily closed their doors.
  • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.

With major fitness chains temporarily closing their doors throughout the United States as Americans grapple with new social distancing measures to curb the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, a growing number of people are turning to at-home fitness apps to stay in shape.

Some services that offer virtual coaching and workout programs designed to be done from anywhere — especially the home — have seen a surge as the coronavirus has expanded in the United States, killing at least 211 people and infecting more than 14,500 across all 50 states and Washington, D.C.

For many in the US, the disruptions that the pandemic will bring to everyday life became very real this week. The White House recommended that the general public should avoid gathering in groups of 10 or more, New York City, Los Angeles, and Washington State announced a shutdown of bars and restaurants, and the city of San Francisco has been ordered to “shelter in place” until April 7.

Gyms were the next major area of public life to be impacted, as a growing number of fitness club such as 24 Hour Fitness, Equinox, LA Fitness, and SoulCycle among others announced temporary closures this week.

That has prompted gym-goers to flock to apps and digital services that offer virtual workout sessions.

One such app, Aaptiv, which offers audio-based fitness programs, says it has seen a boost in new users and engagement recently. Aaptiv has specifically seen growth when it comes to wellness programs that don’t require equipment, like those geared toward meditation, body weight exercises, and improving sleep.

Such programs have seen a spike over the last few days in particular, Ethan Agarwal, Aaptiv’s founder and CEO, told Business Insider, likely because they’re easy to perform at home without requiring an investment in new gear.

Engagement for non-equipment programs has increased by 50% this week, whereas usually the engagement is the same for both equipment and non-equipment-based workouts, Agarwal said.

It’s not just the gym closures, he said, but the fact that people may be seeking an outlet for anxiety and a cure for boredom during this social distancing period that may have led to this increase.

“Right now, when everyone’s anxiousness is up and people are nervous and stressed and even frankly a little bored sometimes, our classes are fun and relaxing,” Agarwal said. “They help you feel better.”

Daily Burn, a service that offers virtual workout classes in areas like high training intensity workouts, barre, and cardio and strength, has also experienced a surge in demand recently.

FitnessAI Unveils Home Workout Features to Meet COVID-19 Fitness Needs

FitnessAI

Tuesday, May 5, 2020 9:30 AM

NEW YORK, NY / ACCESSWIRE / May 5, 2020 / Today, FitnessAI, the app that uses AI to generate personalized workout plans, has officially rolled out several new features to meet the swelling market demand for at-home fitness applications and equipment during the COVID-19 quarantine.

“FitnessAI is traditionally a strength training app meant for the gym,” details FitnessAI Founder, Jake Mor. “Since gyms are closed, we decided to shift our attention to home workout plans that require absolutely no equipment. Specifically, we’re focusing on two cardio offerings: Home Workouts and The Daily Class.”

FitnessAI is known for its emphasis on strength training, which tailors workouts for users based on their goals. Mor’s algorithm optimizes sets, weights, and reps for optimal muscle growth based on a dataset of more than 6 million workouts from his previous app, Lift Log. FitnessAI has been downloaded over 400K times since the beginning of the year and has gone through the renowned Y Combinator accelerator.

Now, with COVID-19 shuttering businesses and gyms around the country, FitnessAI is catering to the strength training audience that doesn’t want to lose the progress they’ve made while stay home.

“We launched Home Workouts for COVID-19 in Beta at the beginning of the month” says Mor.

“We also hired a trainer to record a 10-minute workout video every single day. Both Home Workouts and The Daily Class are available for free inside the FitnessAI App. The response has been so overwhelmingly positive that we are keeping both features around long term, and forever free.”

The FitnessAI team has also been toiling away at a redesign of the app, which will enable users to customize the app based on the equipment they have at home. “We plan on revamping the weight lifting section of FitnessAI to allow for users to enter exactly what equipment they have, so we can build a strength training routine that uses AI to get them stronger, faster.” says Mor.

People are stocking up on home workout equipment, often paying premiums for basic weights right now. They’re looking for apps like FitnessAI to complement their new circumstances with the same personalization and training regimen as having a professional trainer. FitnessAI, which has already captured a sizable market of people intent on rigorous strength training, is well positioned to onboard more users as workout preferences shift under the sway of quarantine, and personalized exercise enters the home.

“While many apps focus on health and fitness, almost all of them aim to help the casual exerciser, mainly serving as reference manuals for good cardio and conditioning exercises,” says Mor. “FitnessAI takes it a step further by using data to literally hack your body into gaining strength faster. We do this by optimizing an age-old weight lifting process known as progressive overload, which is the act of making your exercises harder every time you workout”.
