Despite best efforts to modernize payment integrity processes, many health plans still do not seamlessly automate and connect their disparate systems or integrate solutions that allow them to scale for evolving needs. Although the healthcare system continues to embrace technology, it still has complexities that cause delays and errors, and loss of time and money for patients, providers and payers. We should use tools and technology that enable cloud-based data delivery, integrated ecosystems, process automation, and intelligent workflow to move the industry closer to point-of-service payments.

How are Fitbit Users Finding New Ways to Achieve Their Fitness Goals?

Shelter-in-place orders have changed much of Fitbit users’ everyday lives. We’ve been staying home, getting more quality rest (a happy surprise), cooking more, and finding new ways to stay active, given that our step counts are down. But, our resting heart rates have improved across the board, which is great news for heart health.

When it comes to staying active, we’ve had to get creative—and Fitbit users have risen to the challenge. In fact, data from mid-April shows that more users exercised one to two times a week in April 2020 than in April 2019. (Exercises were either auto-detected or manually logged on users’ Fitbit devices, and lasted for a duration of at least 15 minutes.) This rings true across major American cities including San Francisco, Denver, and New York, as well as global cities including Paris, Seoul, and Tokyo—with Madrid being one notable exception.

Note that week 15 is the week ending April 14 and April 12 in 2019 and 2020 respectively. Additionally, we’re seeing more users exercising more than five times a week, with some cities posting as much as an impressive 10 percent increase.

We love that so many of you are getting creative with your workouts outside of the gym, and wanted to dig into specific exercises logged to see exactly what’s changed. One big takeaway from our findings? While not having access to a treadmill, weights, or elliptical machine means that exercises that would be typically performed in a gym are down, the frequency of most exercises went up. For example, among those who still have access to a treadmill, we’ve seen the frequency of use increase by more than 30 percent.

That said, other exercises that can be performed at home or outside are on the rise! Walk exercises, or brisk walks that last for at least 15 minutes, are up, and walks still constitute a large portion of user exercises. We’ve also seen substantial increases in the popularity of biking, yoga, and aerobic workouts. Among users who exercised at least once per week, yoga and biking have seen an increase of over 40 percent, while aerobic workouts have increased by more than 20 percent—meaning that users are taking this time to switch up their fitness routines.

The one category of exercise that saw a decrease in frequency is sport, which typically engages a group of people. As this isn’t possible at the moment, we’ve observed a nearly 18 percent decrease in frequency.

Another fun fact: the timing of exercise has also shifted. Now that users are less bound to a typical workday schedule, we’ve seen fewer lunchtime walks or early morning runs that used to be squeezed in before a commute. And now that the weekend is less packed with social activities, we’ve seen an increase in Friday evening runs.

While the timing of exercise has shifted around the world, changes have not been consistent from region to region. In San Francisco, California, we’re seeing a concentration of runs in the late afternoon

Home workout apps booming as gyms close due to coronavirus

  • As major gym chains close their doors to curb the coronavirus outbreak, people are increasingly turning to digital workout programs to maintain their exercise routines from home.
  • Services like Daily Burn, Aaptiv, and TA Online Studio have all said they’ve seen an increase in demand and engagement over the past several days.
  • The boon comes as gyms like Equinox, 24 Hour Fitness, and SoulCycle among other leading fitness clubs have temporarily closed their doors.
  • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.

With major fitness chains temporarily closing their doors throughout the United States as Americans grapple with new social distancing measures to curb the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, a growing number of people are turning to at-home fitness apps to stay in shape.

Some services that offer virtual coaching and workout programs designed to be done from anywhere — especially the home — have seen a surge as the coronavirus has expanded in the United States, killing at least 211 people and infecting more than 14,500 across all 50 states and Washington, D.C.

For many in the US, the disruptions that the pandemic will bring to everyday life became very real this week. The White House recommended that the general public should avoid gathering in groups of 10 or more, New York City, Los Angeles, and Washington State announced a shutdown of bars and restaurants, and the city of San Francisco has been ordered to “shelter in place” until April 7.

Gyms were the next major area of public life to be impacted, as a growing number of fitness club such as 24 Hour Fitness, Equinox, LA Fitness, and SoulCycle among others announced temporary closures this week.

That has prompted gym-goers to flock to apps and digital services that offer virtual workout sessions.

One such app, Aaptiv, which offers audio-based fitness programs, says it has seen a boost in new users and engagement recently. Aaptiv has specifically seen growth when it comes to wellness programs that don’t require equipment, like those geared toward meditation, body weight exercises, and improving sleep.

Such programs have seen a spike over the last few days in particular, Ethan Agarwal, Aaptiv’s founder and CEO, told Business Insider, likely because they’re easy to perform at home without requiring an investment in new gear.

Engagement for non-equipment programs has increased by 50% this week, whereas usually the engagement is the same for both equipment and non-equipment-based workouts, Agarwal said.

It’s not just the gym closures, he said, but the fact that people may be seeking an outlet for anxiety and a cure for boredom during this social distancing period that may have led to this increase.

“Right now, when everyone’s anxiousness is up and people are nervous and stressed and even frankly a little bored sometimes, our classes are fun and relaxing,” Agarwal said. “They help you feel better.”

Daily Burn, a service that offers virtual workout classes in areas like high training intensity workouts, barre, and cardio and strength, has also experienced a surge in demand recently.

Coronavirus in China: Beijing wants to promote traditional medicine but not everyone is on board

Every morning and evening, the 38-year-old was handed a bag of brown soup — a traditional Chinese remedy blended from over 20 herbs, including ephedra, cinnamon twigs and licorice root.

But unlike most patients around him, Xiong was skeptical of its efficacy and refused to drink it.

“In my opinion, it is a sheer placebo,” said, Xiong, who was discharged in late February from the makeshift hospital run by TCM doctors where no Western medicine was provided, apart from medication for underlying conditions, such as high blood pressure.

The “lung-clearing and detoxing soup,” as the herbal compound he was given is called, was part of the Chinese government’s push to use Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in the fight against the novel coronavirus outbreak.

As scientists race to find a cure and vaccine, China is increasingly turning to its traditional remedies. As of late last month, more than 85% of all coronavirus patients in China — about 60,000 people — had received herbal remedies alongside mainstream antiviral drugs, according to the Ministry of Science and Technology.
“We are willing to share the ‘Chinese experience’ and ‘Chinese solution’ of treating Covid-19, and let more countries get to know Chinese medicine, understand Chinese medicine and use Chinese medicine,” Yu Yanhong, deputy head of China’s National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, said at a press conference last week.
But even in China, where TCM has a large number of adherents, the government has been unable to quell its skeptics — like Xiong. Abroad, the herbal remedies could face even more skepticism from Western medical experts, who have long questioned their safety and effectiveness.
The Chinese government has been promoting the use of traditional Chinese medicine to treat Covid-19.

Search for a cure

There is no known cure for the coronavirus which has killed more than 4,000 people, sickened over 115,000 and spread to 75 countries and regions worldwide.

Scientists are working to find ways to stamp out the deadly virus. But for now, the mainstream antiviral treatments focus on relieving the symptoms — and that’s where China believes its ancient remedies can help.

“By adjusting the whole body health and improving immunity, TCM can help stimulate the patients’ abilities to resist and recover from the disease, which is an effective way of therapy,” she said, adding that traditional medicine had helped fight viruses in the past, such as the SARS pandemic in 2002 and 2003 that killed hundreds in China.

So far, more than 50,000 novel coronavirus patients have been discharged from hospital, and the majority of them used TCM, Yu said, citing it as evidence for the efficacy of using Chinese and Western medicine in tandem

In a clinical trial of 102 patients with mild symptoms in Wuhan, patients with combined treatments compared with the control group of patients receiving only Western medicine, Yu said. Their recovery rate was 33% higher, she added.

In another study of more serious cases, patients receiving combined treatments also left hospital sooner than the control group and had greater levels of oxygen in their blood and a higher lymphocyte count — an

45 best health tips ever

We’ve done the legwork for you and here they are: the 45 best health tips. Make that 46 – taking the time to read this tops the list.

1. Copy your kitty: Learn to do stretching exercises when you wake up. It boosts circulation and digestion, and eases back pain.

2. Don’t skip breakfast. Studies show that eating a proper breakfast is one of the most positive things you can do if you are trying to lose weight. Breakfast skippers tend to gain weight. A balanced breakfast includes fresh fruit or fruit juice, a high-fibre breakfast cereal, low-fat milk or yoghurt, wholewheat toast, and a boiled egg.

3. Brush up on hygiene. Many people don’t know how to brush their teethproperly. Improper brushing can cause as much damage to the teeth and gums as not brushing at all. Lots of people don’t brush for long enough, don’t floss and don’t see a dentist regularly. Hold your toothbrush in the same way that would hold a pencil, and brush for at least two minutes.

This includes brushing the teeth, the junction of the teeth and gums, the tongue and the roof of the mouth. And you don’t need a fancy, angled toothbrush – just a sturdy, soft-bristled one that you replace each month.

4. Neurobics for your mind. Get your brain fizzing with energy. American researchers coined the term ‘neurobics’ for tasks which activate the brain’s own biochemical pathways and to bring new pathways online that can help to strengthen or preserve brain circuits.

Brush your teeth with your ‘other’ hand, take a new route to work or choose your clothes based on sense of touch rather than sight. People with mental agility tend to have lower rates of Alzheimer’s disease and age-related mental decline.

5. Get what you give! Always giving and never taking? This is the short road to compassion fatigue. Give to yourself and receive from others, otherwise you’ll get to a point where you have nothing left to give. And hey, if you can’t receive from others, how can you expect them to receive from you?

6. Get spiritual. A study conducted by the formidably sober and scientific Harvard University found that patients who were prayed for recovered quicker than those who weren’t, even if they weren’t aware of the prayer.

7. Get smelly. Garlic, onions, spring onions and leeks all contain stuff that’s good for you. A study at the Child’s Health Institute in Cape Town found that eating raw garlic helped fight serious childhood infections. Heat destroys these properties, so eat yours raw, wash it down with fruit juice or, if you’re a sissy, have it in tablet form.

8. Knock one back. A glass of red wine a day is good for you. A number of studies have found this, but a recent one found that the polyphenols (a type of antioxidant) in green tea, red wine and olives may also help protect you

FitnessAI Unveils Home Workout Features to Meet COVID-19 Fitness Needs

FitnessAI

Tuesday, May 5, 2020 9:30 AM

NEW YORK, NY / ACCESSWIRE / May 5, 2020 / Today, FitnessAI, the app that uses AI to generate personalized workout plans, has officially rolled out several new features to meet the swelling market demand for at-home fitness applications and equipment during the COVID-19 quarantine.

“FitnessAI is traditionally a strength training app meant for the gym,” details FitnessAI Founder, Jake Mor. “Since gyms are closed, we decided to shift our attention to home workout plans that require absolutely no equipment. Specifically, we’re focusing on two cardio offerings: Home Workouts and The Daily Class.”

FitnessAI is known for its emphasis on strength training, which tailors workouts for users based on their goals. Mor’s algorithm optimizes sets, weights, and reps for optimal muscle growth based on a dataset of more than 6 million workouts from his previous app, Lift Log. FitnessAI has been downloaded over 400K times since the beginning of the year and has gone through the renowned Y Combinator accelerator.

Now, with COVID-19 shuttering businesses and gyms around the country, FitnessAI is catering to the strength training audience that doesn’t want to lose the progress they’ve made while stay home.

“We launched Home Workouts for COVID-19 in Beta at the beginning of the month” says Mor.

“We also hired a trainer to record a 10-minute workout video every single day. Both Home Workouts and The Daily Class are available for free inside the FitnessAI App. The response has been so overwhelmingly positive that we are keeping both features around long term, and forever free.”

The FitnessAI team has also been toiling away at a redesign of the app, which will enable users to customize the app based on the equipment they have at home. “We plan on revamping the weight lifting section of FitnessAI to allow for users to enter exactly what equipment they have, so we can build a strength training routine that uses AI to get them stronger, faster.” says Mor.

People are stocking up on home workout equipment, often paying premiums for basic weights right now. They’re looking for apps like FitnessAI to complement their new circumstances with the same personalization and training regimen as having a professional trainer. FitnessAI, which has already captured a sizable market of people intent on rigorous strength training, is well positioned to onboard more users as workout preferences shift under the sway of quarantine, and personalized exercise enters the home.

“While many apps focus on health and fitness, almost all of them aim to help the casual exerciser, mainly serving as reference manuals for good cardio and conditioning exercises,” says Mor. “FitnessAI takes it a step further by using data to literally hack your body into gaining strength faster. We do this by optimizing an age-old weight lifting process known as progressive overload, which is the act of making your exercises harder every time you workout”.
