CHICAGO — Oral health can be a concern for people who are sheltering at home.
Dentistry is defined by close contact with patients, and distancing in the era of COVID-19 poses new challenges.
From the air down to the water, a local doctor is bringing high tech infection control to his neighborhood office.
When news of the virus shutting down China made its way to the U.S, Dr. Michael Czarkowski sunk his teeth deep into research.
“We’ve got to come up with a plan and I’m a pro-active person so I tried to figure out what do I have to do in my practice to protect my patients, my team and my family,” he said.
The dentist who typically sees 80 to 100 patients a week now sees about five for emergency procedures only.
And with worries about COVID-19, the phone isn’t exactly ringing off the hook.
“I can just tell some people are nervous,” he said. “But once they see what we’ve done, I can see their anxiety level diminish.”
Air filtration system bathed in UV light cleans particles from the air. The office has its own heating and cooling system.
“We can control the air coming in so we have kind of a positive pressure system you’d see in a hospital operating room,” Czarkowski said.
In the dental chair, droplets are an occupational hazard.
“We have to deal with patients as far as aerosols,” he said. “When we prepare teeth we drill, we create an aerosol. How are we going to control that? What’s the best thing we can do?”
Czarkowski said they use a unit that “takes the aerosol we create when we prepare a tooth for a filling, a crown or a bridge, and sucks it through the machine and runs it through a series of filters.”
Any aerosolized droplets are filtered through a medical grade system that eliminates virus bacteria and mold particles and vented out of the building.
“These units we can rotate the air and clean the air 16 times per hour,” Czarkowski said.
With all the new tools in place, Czarkowski hopes the high tech will ease some of the pain when it comes to a visit to the dentist.
“They know me. They trust me. They expect me to provide and take care of them,” he said. “I take that responsibility seriously.”
All the new technology and the necessary PPE adds up. Czarkowski said he will have to consider an infection control fee to cover the added costs.

Time for a brutally honest and vulnerable life update. Iâm usually very private about my life experiences, but this community has always felt like a safe space to share my struggles and successes. Iâve been away from this community and health in general this past year. I come from an extremely toxic and abusive home life and was juggling that healing with trying to move away for university last year. I got really sick when I was away at school and my health (mental, physical, and emotional) all began to spiral despite my best efforts. In truth, I have struggled with body dysmoprhia and healthy food habits since I was a child (insert childhood trauma here lmao). While I was active as a kid and as a teenager and ate healthy, I obssesed over my figure becauce I am built curvy. At my healthiest, I was not enough for myself. I was hitting the gym twice a day everyday and convincing myself that eating little to no calories a day was good for me because what I was eating was healthy. If I so much as ate a cheat meal, I would guilt myself for weeks after. While these last two years have been some of the worst of my life, they have made me stop and ask myself what health really means. Iâve been able to pinpoint these nevative habits I have and instead focus on healthy choices regardless of what the reflection or the number on the scale looks like. Iâve gone from not wanting to get out of bed in the morning to waking up early to get in a mile run. Not because I have to, but because I enjoy it. This to me is a health transformation! Iâm proud to say that I am now embarking on month 3 of my fitness journey. All clean eating and exercising 3 times a week on top of attending school AND working shifts at the hopsital during this pandemic. But most importantly, clean thinking. Talking to myself kindly and appreciating my body for what it can do. I say all of this to say that your journey is yours and no one elseâs. And if you arenât already, be a little kinder to yourself. All those insecurities only have the power you give to them. Whether youâve just started working toward your goal, arenât where you want to be, or are almost there: take a moment to stop and be proud of all the work youâve put in. Each healthy choice is a choice to be celebrated and proud of!
Although there has been substantial progress in cancer treatment, screening, diagnosis, and prevention over the past several decades, addressing cancer health disparities—such as higher cancer death rates, less frequent use of proven screening tests, and higher rates of advanced cancer diagnoses—in certain populations is an area in which progress has not kept pace.
These disparities are frequently seen in people from low-socioeconomic groups, certain racial/ethnic populations, and those who live in geographically isolated areas.

Many of the same population groups that experience cancer health disparities are also significantly underrepresented in cancer clinical trials.
There has been some recent evidence of progress against cancer health disparities, including reductions in lung and prostate cancer deaths among African American men over the past decade. But researchers and public health officials agree that progress has come too slowly, and the cost of disparities—in terms of premature deaths, lost productivity, and the impact on communities—remains substantial and must be addressed.
Cancer disparities and equity research is needed to understand why some groups of people may be more or less likely to develop cancer, experience cancer-related health problems, or die from cancer than other groups of people.
As recognition of cancer health disparities has grown, so have efforts to move beyond simply documenting the problem toward understanding all of its causes and developing and testing interventions to remedy it. Studies suggest that the differences observed in cancer incidence and mortality between various population groups are the result of a complex interplay of genetic, environmental, and social factors.
For example, access to care is a critical element that contributes to cancer health disparities. Access to care is influenced by a web of factors, such as insurance status and proximity to health care facilities. Changes that have been implemented as a result of the Affordable Care Act are already helping to address the issue of access to health care by making recommended cancer screening and prevention interventions more affordable and expanding Medicaid.
Patient navigation, which is a strategy to help patients maneuver through our complex health care system, has also shown promise as a means of addressing cancer health disparities. Navigators can help patients overcome the multitude of barriers that can derail access to quality care, such as insufficient finances and lack of transportation.

“Notable increases” in deaths were seen in March and early April, the team led by the Yale School of Public Health found. This was especially true in New York and New Jersey, states hard-hit by the pandemic.
The study was first reported by the Washington Post.
Using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the team found about 15,000 excess deaths from March 1 to April 4. During the same time, states reported 8,000 deaths from Covid-19. “That is close to double,” Dan Weinberger, who studies the epidemiology of infectious diseases at Yale, told CNN.
The team could not show whether the increased deaths were due to coronavirus, Weinberger said. But there are strong indications that they were. For instance, the team also looked at data on doctor visits.
“What we see is that in many states, you see an increase in influenza-like illnesses, and then a week or two later, you see an increase in deaths due to pneumonia and influenza,” Weinberger said. “It provides some confirmation that what we are seeing is related to coronavirus.”
Plus, in especially hard-hit states such as New York and New Jersey, where coronavirus is known to have spread widely and infected many people, overall deaths were far in excess in what would normally have been expected in March.
“In New York City, this discrepancy was even more stark, with three to four times as many excess all-cause deaths as pneumonia and influenza deaths,” the team wrote.
Some states, such as New York, seemed to keep up with the Covid-19 deaths. The state reporting of deaths in the pandemic closely tracked what the Yale team found. But others did not.
The new coronavirus causes respiratory disease, and deaths would presumably be listed among the regular reports of deaths and illness from pneumonia and influenza. But doctors are increasingly reporting other, sometimes fatal, symptoms from Covid-19, including strokes, kidney failure and heart damage.
Patients already weakened by pre-existing conditions such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease may have had a death listed as being due to one of those causes, rather than coronavirus.
Plus, it’s possible that coronavirus lockdowns would have led to a lower-than-average death rate. For instance, if fewer people were driving, traffic deaths could be expected to fall, Weinberger said.
So Weinberger’s team looked at both deaths from pneumonia and influenza, and deaths from all causes.
“We decided to look at all deaths from pneumonia, or all deaths overall, and see how those numbers were changing,” Weinberger said.
The CDC tracks deaths from pneumonia and influenza by the week, and compares them to a baseline of deaths to keep tabs on the annual epidemic of seasonal flu. Separately, the National Center for Health Statistics, part of the CDC, keeps data on all reported deaths.

In 1992 at Valley City State University, Professor Joe Stickler and his students began work on Medicine Wheel Park. The project soon expanded beyond the walls of the classroom to involve the community. The Park features two solar calendars: A horizon calendar (the medicine wheel) and a meridian or noontime calendar. Other aspects of this unique 30-acre Park include Native American burial mounds, solar system model, the North Country National Scenic Trail and other woodland nature trials, several scenic overlooks of the Sheyenne River valley and Valley City, and a 3000 square foot perennial flower garden.
The Medicine Wheel
Early cultures throughout the world built rock structures which joined the landscape to the sky, some serving as calendars. Stonehenge in England is an example. Over 100 Medicine Wheels constructed by Native Americans have been found in the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains of the United States and Canada. Their complete story is lost in the vastness of time.
The Medicine Wheel’s large circle measures 213 feet around. The 28 spokes radiating from its center represent the number of days in the lunar cycle. Six spokes extending well beyond the Wheel are aligned to the horizon positions of sunrises and sunsets on the first days of the four seasons.
The design of this rock sculpture was inspired by the Big Horn Medicine Wheel in Wyoming and reflects the beauty of the Earth’s journey around the Sun and the grand cycle of the seasons. The Park’s Medicine Wheel is a multicultural symbol celebrating the calendar discovery process by our intelligent human ancestors around the globe and honoring the presence of the Native American burial mounds in the center of the Park.
Native American Burial Mounds
The twelve burial mounds existing within the borders of the Park are part of a larger group first charted by T. H. Lewis on October 29, 1883. These mounds are typical of the complex cemeteries used for hundreds of years by the Plains Woodland Indians during periods dating from the 500 to 2000 years ago.
A Walking Tour of the Solar System
The Solar System model stretches from the Sun (in the center of the Medicine Wheel) to Pluto, one third of a mile away near Regional Technology Center. Boulders representing the planets are spaced in exact proportion to their distances from the Sun (1 foot = 3 million miles).
A Meridian Calendar
The utility pole nearest to the Medicine Wheel serves as a reminder of another ancient method of keeping track of the seasons. This type of calendar uses the length of the shadow cast by an object at local apparent noon. Three large rocks located north of the pole mark the top of the pole’s shadow at the beginning of each season.
North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT)
The NCT is a 4,600 mile across seven northern states linking North Dakota to New York. A segment of this trail winds through the wooded hillside of the Park and along a concrete path marking the planets
